Known as the ‘Big Durian’, Jakarta is a hot, bustling, eclectic cultural melting pot of a metropolis, with a smorgasbord of choices to indulge the intrepid traveller. Packed with skyscrapers juxtaposed with street vendors, Jakarta is a city of traditions and contrasts. You will find five-star restaurants to satiate your culinary demands alongside behemoth malls filled with designer shops, and markets where you can haggle over a rupiah or two.

Have breakfast at the Ranch Market in Kemang – the smoked salmon combo will get your taste buds going. Then commandeer a bajaj and chug along Jalan Kemang Raya, taking in the sights and shops.

The Dutch quarter of Batavia and Menteng harks back to the colonial days with retro architecture, beautiful residences, and cool hotels. Enjoy the city-view – and a drink – at the rooftop lounge of the exquisite Hermitage Hotel.

Stop by the flea market on Jalan Surabaya, where chandeliers, vinyl records, and ‘antiques’ jostle for your attention. Then carry on to Merdeka Square to appreciate the cultural history of Jakarta.

Why not lunch at newly refurbished FJ Bistro & Deli in Kemang? Salubriously funky, it has an array of dishes and snacks to choose from. Be sure to try the popcorn prawns.

Downstairs from FJ’s you can shop for ‘uptown trendy’ clothes. And in the same building there is ARC Medispa – indulge your senses.

Jalan Senopatihouses some fabulous restaurants and tea houses. Try Cacaoté at no. 80. Or if you want great burgers, The Three Buns at no. 90 will more than fill you.

Check out Papilion Duo and Galeries Lafayette in Pacific Place mall, where up-and-coming local designers rub shoulders with international brands.

Try the lamb tagine and moreish chicken wings at the Skye restaurant on the 56th floor of the Menara BCA building. Be mesmerised by the panoramic views of Jakarta by night. Breathtaking.

Head to the SHY Rooftop at the Papilion in Kemang, where the über-chic of Jakarta drape stylishly on the sofas. On Fridays see the resident band celebrating the start of the weekend with great tunes.
