Atlanta is a vibrant metropolis, home to a burgeoning culinary scene, shopping to suit every taste, and myriad opportunities to be outdoors. While a day merely scratches the surface, with insider knowledge of where to go and what to explore, you’ll get a taste of the city’s charms – and its signature Southern hospitality.

Set your alarm and watch the city come alive with a stroll on the Atlanta BeltLine. The 35km pedestrian- and bike-friendly corridor leverages the historic rail system that encircles the city.

Visit Ponce City Market, the former Atlanta City Hall East transformed into a mecca for shopping and dining. A piccolo from Spiller Park Coffee and a fried Hop’s Chicken biscuit will help fuel the day.

Enjoy an explosion of spring colour throughout Atlanta Botanical Garden’s 12 hectares. Visit from May to October to see Chihuly in the Garden, featuring 20 art installations by acclaimed glass artist Dale Chihuly.

Bring your appetite to Fred’s Meat & Bread at Krog Street Market. Order their signature rib-eye cheesesteak, a side of Old Bay fries, and wash it all down with a bottle of vintage soda.

Prepare to be inspired by a visit to the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, with exhibits on both the American Civil Rights Movement and global human rights issues.

Take home a souvenir from the Gregg Irby Gallery. The gallery represents emerging artists from around the southern USA, and ships worldwide. Some pieces are small enough to fit in your suitcase.

Art enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the High Museum of Art. Linger over more than 1,000 pieces of American art from the 19th and 20th centuries by renowned artists such as Andrew Wyeth and Marsden Hartley.

Cosy up to a table at Ecco for expertly prepared Mediterranean fare. You’ll see first-hand why this restaurant is a favourite of visiting celebrities like Owen Wilson, Cameron Diaz, and Jennifer Aniston.

Stars like Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Grace Potter, and Wilco have graced the stage of the historic Tabernacle, built in 1898, proving there’s something for almost any musical penchant.
