Qatar Airways introduction of Philadelphia to its destination list on April 2 has opened up access to one of the United States great cities, rich in history as the centre of the US fight for independence while undergoing a seemingly perpetual modernisation through ambitious boutiques, top-class restaurants, and an energy buoyed by an influx of transplants priced out of nearby New York City and Washington DC.

Philadelphia is a city of diverse neighbourhoods. While you wont be able to hit all of it during your 24 hours here, if you’re willing to skip sleep and keep moving, you’ll see how much there is to love about the City of Brotherly Love.

Head to Reading Terminal Market and the Dutch Eating Place, for specialities such as a hot apple dumpling served with whipped cream. A stroll provides a cultural introduction to the city.

The National Constitution Center offers an interactive hands-on perspective of the US Constitution through high-tech exhibitions and artefacts. Then head south to the famed Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.

Shopping along Chestnut Street could put you off schedule, but bring yourself to Monks Café, offering eight varieties of mussels and frîtes and Philadelphias finest beer list  high praise in this craft-beer-heavy city.

Around Rittenhouse Square was home to the city’s Victorian aristocracy. The park is adorned with oak, maple, locust trees, and bronze sculptures such as Antoine-Louis Baryes `Lion Crushing a Serpent.

Take in Rittenhouse Row, which is brimming with art galleries, haute couture boutiques, national retailers, speciality shops, luxurious spas and salons, restaurants, and cafés.

Drop into Farm and Fisherman, where owner Josh Lawler turns fresh local offerings into seasonal variations, including his signature beet steak  an item that beats most cuts of beef in the city!

Head to Barnes Foundation Museum, which brings collections of works by Picasso, Matisse, and Modigliani among others to Museum Row. Friday nights, the museum hosts concerts.

Kick up the tempo at Johnny Brenda's, whose small stage draws big indie music acts. Venture to Frankford Hall, a German-style pub with a large beer garden, fire pits, and the best Bavarian pretzels.

A stroll along Penn's Landing waterfront will bring you to Khyber Pass Pub, which despite technically closing at 2am proudly boasts its vast beer selection will be flowing freely until they are gone.
