Seychelles food incorporates French, Chinese, Indian, and African influences, with seafood dishes featuring prominently on menus. For a touch of local colour these restaurants in or near the capital, Victoria, are worth visiting while sightseeing or shopping.

Le Jardin Du Roi

If your dining experience is enhanced by a glorious setting, Le Jardin Du Roi Spice Garden perched high in the hills in a virgin rainforest is for you. This intimate open-air restaurant is just the place to enjoy inspiring views of the island while lingering over a Creole lunch. This spice plantation bursting with vanilla, citronella, cinnamon, nutmeg, and pepper, transports visitors back to the Seychelles of old, when colonial houses dotted the island and spice was the commodity. The menu includes delights such as saffron fish, sweet crêpes, grouper, or kingfish wrapped in banana leaves, and fresh-from-the-garden salads of green papaya, breadfruit, and star fruit. Their homemade ice creams are tantalisingly enhanced by home- grown spices. After eating, explore the gardens and meet the colony of gentle giant tortoises, or hike to the mountain summit.

La Perle Noire

La Perle Noire restaurant specialises in Italian, international, and Creole cuisine. There is an outside veranda area in the midst of a tropical garden, perfect for those who fancy romantic al fresco dining surrounded by delicate floral fragrances. Lots of fish, all bursting with flavour from the sea, feature on the menu, including tec tecs, which are tiny white shellfish mixed with pumpkin and made into soup, grilled kingfish stuffed with chillies, crispy and spicy prawns, and the restaurant’s delicious version of Carii Coco, a coconut milk curry generally served with fish. Vegetarians might go for the aubergine fritters or a vegetable pasta dish, while breadfruit is served as matchstick chips, or baked with butter, which accentuates its nutty, potato taste. It is said that eating breadfruit in Seychelles will guarantee your return. Surely this is the ideal place to try it and see if it comes true...

Pirates Arms Restaurant

The Pirates Arms Restaurant has an enviable location in the middle of Victoria and offers traditional Seychellois cuisine at reasonable prices. Always buzzing, this atmospheric 160-seat restaurant is almost an institution on Mahé. It’s one of those places to sit on the veranda and people-watch while sipping the local SeyBrew beer or – for brave souls only – bacca, strong fermented sugar-cane juice. Herby Fish Creole is the house speciality, while some highlights of Seychellois cuisine are also on the menu, including Asian stir fries and hot, rich chicken curries thickened with coconut milk and served with chatini, a vinegary type of chutney made with mango, papaya, and pumpkin. They also proffer an excellent marinated red snapper grilled with garlic. If you have space left after the mains, calorific desserts include coconut cake and sweet potato cake with vanilla sauce.
