Vineyards


Long Island’s East End is a burgeoning winemaking region. Topping 3,000 acres along the Island’s North and South Forks, more than 50 producers offer the gamut, from internationally praised Merlot and Cabernet Franc to Chenin Blanc and glorious Rieslings.

The North Fork’s top tier includes Bedell and its sister outfit, Corey Creek, as well as Martha Clara and Pellegrini. On the South Fork, take in Channing Daughters and Wélffer. Tastings are abundant, and the East End is easy to navigate. But if you don’t want to search by yourself, Long Island Wine Tours provide stops at three vineyards, lunch, and entertainment at the wineries – which often offer live jazz or other music during the day.

Places to stay


You don’t need to venture to Manhattan for scenic and historic sights, as Long Island has plenty of its own. For example, Sagamore Hill is a 23-room Victorian mansion built by President Theodore Roosevelt, now serving as 
a dedicated museum. The property includes a scenic and relaxing walk through an oak and tulip-tree forest, ending on the beach front.
 The elegant Vanderbilt Museum is the former home of the wealthy Vanderbilt family, boasting a 43-acre estate that overlooks Northport Harbor and Long Island Sound. The on-site planetarium is a stellar – or interstellar – stop for any science and space lover.
