Stock markets move at lightning speed, so time truly is money.Fortunately, the latest mobile technologies have spurred new programs by which you can track every penny from wherever you are. After all, being out of touch with work is one thing. Being out of touch with your money is quite another. Stock Apps
PortfolioLive? At your fingertips, PortfolioLive by Turing Studios provides real-time access to all major US exchanges as well as most international exchanges. In addition to its standard ability to create an unlimited number of portfolios and customised snapshots of market news, quotes and charts of interest, version 2.0 has also modified its tab navigation layout to maximise info on the screen at a given time and supports hundreds of currencies for the purpose of conversion.
Stockwatch Like many other stock applications for the iPhone, ToughTurtle’s Stockwatch allows traders to create an unlimited watchlist of stocks, mutual funds, or commodities. With a single tap, each stock’s progress is revealed – now with full-screen charts – and all relevant news presented. Custom portfolios can also be created, but the application’s key feature is the ability to sync with the free Stock Watch Sync service, which allows traders to access their watchlist from any device connected to the Internet.
03 Bloomberg A free application from a financial news leader, Bloomberg’s application is available through a variety of mobile units and offers robust customisation features. Traders can create a personalised My Stocks folder, and coverage of global markets is prominent. The dark-themed application includes a robust read-only newsfeed that goes above and beyond. Bloomberg’s award-winning journalistic arm means news moving across Bloomberg is more detailed and researched than on most other applications. They may tell you what, but Bloomberg will tell you why.
iStockManager Online broker TD Ameritrade offers iStockManager, which has the most support among iPhone users but also is available for a variety of Blackberry models, as well as Android. Working exclusively with TD Ameritrade accounts, iStockManager enables on-the-go access to streaming data, equity and option trading, real-time balances, and market news updates. A five-tab system – quotes, trades, balance, trade, and configure – serves as the root of the application, which seems to undergo significant updates every couple of months.
AOL Daily Finance Many free finance applications for mobiles, and for the iPhone in particular, are unitaskers, particularly with respect to stock quotes and charting. But AOL’s Daily Finance, launched nearly a year ago, provides a full-featured invest-ment information portal including real-time equity quotes from the BATS Exchange. As you would expect, you can link directly to your portfolio via your AOL account. The application’s most praised feature is its comprehensive charting support, under which simple taps and rotations of the device offer myriad analyses.
Google Finance for Android The anticipation that Google’s Android open-source operating system is the next big thing has investors salivating over the potential. As it is, the application already offers stock quotes, market data, quotes, charts, and a very cool auto-suggestion feature. But the excitement of Android is as much about what could come in the future, such as bro-kers releasing apps that allow investors to make immediate flash trades with a flick or tap of the touchscreen. The current limitation is US markets only.
Yahoo Stocks Many stock applications cull their stock price updates from Yahoo anyway, so having this core application as a default for the iPhone makes perfect sense. Easy to navigate and graphically bold, the Yahoo app is ideal for up-to-the-minute stock updates and includes a series of customisation features that make Yahoo Stocks the perfect quick-hit application for the investor on the go. The Tech Ticker, one of the Yahoo Stocks online version’s most popular features, is included in the mobile version as well.
E*TRADE Mobile Pro If you’re not an E*Trade customer, this is a standard application that allows you to stay up-to-date with financial mar-kets, offering delayed stock quotes for any security and the biggest market news. But if you’re an E*Trade user, the trading world opens up for you. Place trades, examine your portfolio, transfer funds between accounts from anywhere. Manoeuvrability is simple, with just a few tabs per screen, but chock full of information, including lists of NYSE and NASDAQ movers.
Blue Mobile As Blackberry surged last year, Blue Mobile – with a sleek and intuitive menu-driven interface – surged with it. Watching more than 100 markets, including 13 emerging markets, and more than 50,000 companies, the award-winning application is noted for its customisation. View bar, line, and candlestick charts in any time frame, re-ceive pop-up instant messages when pre-defined alerts are triggered, and employ a handy messaging system through which you can share market information securely and in real-time with colleagues and customers. |
Google Joins the Fray
A year ago, Android was one phone on one network in one country and with one language. Today, the system is 20 phones on 59 carriers in 48 countries with 19 languages. |
