A concise guide to exfoliation

Nowhere do the rules of the Circle of Life apply more to beauty than in exfoliation. Only by buffing away dull, dead skin cells can you reveal the beautiful young cells waiting to shine through. Scrubbing is especially beneficial to those with oily skin, as oil acts as a glue of sorts, preventing the body’s natural process of desquamation, or shedding dead skin cells. Buffing the body once or twice a week is ideal, especially before shaving (to achieve a closer shave) and before applying any self-tanning creams. Here are some products that provide the best results. Be sure to follow up with a body lotion or facial toner and cream.

For the body

Clinique-ally Proven

Formulated for sensitive skin, and free of oils or fragrances, the Sparkle Skin Body Exfoliating Cream is completely hypoallergenic, so it’s ideal for even the most delicate of skin types. It leaves the skin baby-soft without overdrying it, or worse, making it overly greasy. The product is gentle enough to use daily or three to four times a week, and is especially useful on knees, elbows, heels, and other rough spots. US$34 Available at Clinique counters at all major airports, or clinique.com

Diamond in the Buff

Ever since La Mer came on the scene with its ‘miracle broth’ that promised to be an elixir of youth and healing, the brand has launched an extensive line of products. One of the most extravagant is The Body Refiner, which contains 1.75 carats of pure diamond dust coupled with other luscious minerals and a soothing cream base that acts as a cushion and leaves skin polished to perfection. US$126 Available at La Mer counters at all major airports, or cremedelamer.com

For the face

Dermal Logic

When exfoliating the face, it’s important to use a soft touch, and truly round granules. Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant ticks all these boxes. It is formulated with salicylic acid and rice enzymes, and a soothing blend of green tea, ginkgo and colloidal oatmeal to calm the skin. Dermalogica recommends using this product with a regimen that includes its Daily Resurfacer: a leave-on chemical exfoliant that refines the skin as you sleep at night. The result: visibly reduced signs of ageing and a smooth, even complexion for better make-up application and fewer clogged pores. US$52 Available at finer pharmacies and salons, and online at dermalogica.com
