One of the easiest (and most affordable) ways to update any outfit is a fresh manicure in one of the season’s must-have shades.

For autumn, it’s out with the romantic pastels and in with something a little sultrier. While black nails have been a surprising hit on the red carpet during the awards season and on the runways, in reality it’s a tricky colour to pull off. Fortunately there are plenty of rich dark lacquer alternatives to try. Think oxblood, dark plum, amethyst, and deepest emerald. Darker hues work best with a high-gloss finish, and an almond or oval-shaped nail to help elongate the fingers.

Shimmer and metallic nail finishes suddenly feel modern again for autumn, but look beyond the obvious three – gold, silver, and bronze – if you want to make a statement. Neutral tones also get an overhaul next season. Nail artists are looking beyond the classic warm buffs and pale pinks and are experimenting with chalky grey and off-white tones for a sleek but modern impact.

Tom Ford Beauty Nail Lacquer

Dark jewel tones are the big trend next season, and day or night this rich plum polish will add some instant glamour to your outfit, and is perfect if you’re looking for an alternative to classic red tones. Tom Ford’s high-performance lacquer gives excellent coverage and a glossy finish. US$32

MAC Nail Lacquer in Quiet Time

Nude tones are the easiest and most flattering way to wear nail polish, and for autumn humble neutrals get a high-fashion makeover. Manicurists are playing with cooler shades of mushroom and dove grey, which expertly achieve fresh-off-the-runway style with classic and timeless appeal. MAC’s chalky mink polish, Quiet Time, is the perfect shade for road-testing the trend. US$16

Estée Lauder Pure Colour Long Lasting Nail Lacquer

Colour might get a little moodier for autumn, but there is no need to banish the sparkle. This midnight-blue polish is shot through with just a little shimmer for a finish that is chic, sophisticated, and subtle. It looks great on hands and feet. US$21
