luxe - Ol Jogi, Kenya
Written by Ayesha Khan
If ever you wished you could witness the brilliant scenery of Sydney Pollack’s Out of Africa first-hand, Ol Jogi, located just 45 minutes by charter plane from Nairobi, will take you right to the centre of it all.
The ranch of famed billionaire horse breeder Alec Wildenstein spans over 23,500 hectares. Here on the Laikipia plateau, sightings of Africa’s elusive ‘Big Five’ (lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros) as well as reticulated giraffe and Grévy’s zebras are daily occurrences.
The property features seven artfully designed suites, each with its own living room, two en-suite bathrooms, and bedrooms with sweeping views of the watering hole and Mt Kenya in the distance (not to mention the custom-made Cartier, Hermès, and Dior design accoutrements throughout).
Since guests have the entire property at their disposal (there is a minimum five-day, maximum 14-people all-inclusive rate), meals made from the finest ranch-grown organic produce can be had whenever – and can consist of whatever – guests desire. Spa treatments are also available as part of the package, and game drives can be arranged at any time of the day or night with dedicated guides waiting to point out the ranch’s indigenous animals.
For more stationary animal spotting,Å guests are invited to an underground tunnel that takes them to an all-glass, bulletproof viewing station where they can enjoy the animals’ interactions (and even some fights) at eye level, without the animals ever knowing they have an audience.
Experience + Conservation
Ol Jogi’s commitment to animal conservancy means that guests can take a rare look into what it takes to be conscientious about wildlife, from an ultra-modern veterinary centre to a wildlife rescue centre where cheetahs, lions, and African wild dogs are fostered. A walk with a friendly troop of baboons can also be arranged, as can horseback safaris for experienced riders interested in being at one with the wildlife.
