Hend, Ghada, and Maha al-Subaey are the three Qatari sisters behind award-winning brand The Kayys. What started out as a hobby – designing Ramadan outfits for the family – soon transformed into the birth of a fashion-forward concept. Today, the brand features two collections every year: the Ramadan Collection and the Haute Couture Collection, both available across the Gulf.

How do three sisters work together artistically to maintain individual creativity within collections?
We are very different in terms of personal style: one has a bold and loud style, another more feminine and calm, and the third is in between both. The advantageous part of this is that we acknowledge this as our strength, and we incorporate all styles into one vision.

What singles your brand out from other designers?
Our brand has a strong focus on structured pieces and a geometrical approach with an eye for detail. We take a simple white T-shirt and tailored trousers and reinvent them using embroidery and beading to create a really strong, feminine look.

At your last show in Doha you combined catwalk fashion and jewellery with installation art. Why?
We wanted the guests to step into our creative world. We have always had a love for jewellery, and we see it as a way to further express our artistic side. The installation art mirrored the intricate beading of our jewellery collection.

How important is social media in promoting the brand?
We update Instagram daily. Customers are always waiting for the next ‘new thing’, the next enviable piece, the next collection.

You’re among the most famous Middle Eastern designers – what advice do you give to encourage other designers in Qatar and the Middle East?
Believe in your dream and vision. Don’t let anything stop you. And no matter how many obstacles you face, if your heart is in it, you will make it!

What is next for The Kayys?
Let’s say, we want to continue exploring and expressing our artistic side, and this could be interpreted in another jewellery collection!
