Written by Nicholas Walton
Serving up authentic Italian coffee and contemporary European fare, Hong Kong’s Caffè Habitū takes the coffee experience one step further with its innovative coffee academy.
Hong Kong’s homegrown coffee sensation, Caffè Habitū, has turned heads and challenged palates in its pursuit of the perfect cup. With locations throughout the city serving up crowd-pleasing menus of Euro classics and great on-the-go dishes, Habitū is best known for its comprehensive coffee ‘college of knowledge’, held at its new Coffee Academy & Roasting Studio in Causeway Bay.
Each class is a journey through the history and culture of coffee; Tourist Cupping looks at coffee and colonialism’s impact on the city, including the creation of the local icon yin yeung, a blend of tea and coffee, and teaches the art of making an exotic Oolong Tea Latte, matched with Chinese egg tarts. The Coffee Connoisseur class is a full-on aroma experience allowing sippers to sample some of the world’s most exclusive coffees, including Kopi Luwak (made from beans of coffee berries which have been eaten and excreted by the Asian Palm Civet), Hawaii Kona, and Blue Mountain. Classes are matched with a sumptuous high tea, and are available in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English.
Habitū’s newest addition is the Latte Art class, which teaches the skills needed to create eye-catching and dynamic designs on top of the perfectly-made cafe latte.
Professional barista trainers lead ‘javaphiles’ through the steps of making a great espresso, forming the perfect milk texture, and pouring a silky latte.
Then it’s all about creative streaks going wild during a 90-minute art class where the coffee is the canvas. Classes are priced from HK$488 (US$63) per person.
