Perth local and City Manager for Urban Walkabout, Georgina Strain, invites Oryx into a day in the life of scouting for the best new food, shopping, and lifestyle spots in and around Beaufort Street, Perth.

Built initially to service the Mount Lawley area in the early 20th century, Beaufort Street today is a bustling hub of outstanding designer boutiques, cafés, and restaurants.

I always make sure my first stop, for any day out in Perth, is for a great coffee! And great coffee is definitely what you will find at the Beaufort Street Merchant, a buzzing brasserie, gourmet provedore, and bar. Their shelves are stacked with handmade pasta, premium olive oils, and an expert selection of fine wines.

For lovers of eclectic furniture and jewellery from around the world, I would recommend a stop off at Kartique, who take their inspiration from overseas travel and then curate their best finds for Perth locals and visitors alike.

Further down the street is the labyrinthine space of Behind The Monkey, which houses some of the most remarkable and unusual gifts and jewellery you’ll ever find. Lose a few hours discovering quirky wonderments, art pieces, and decorative items that crowd the shelves and themed rooms.

Treat yourself and pop into luxury niche fragrance and skincare boutique Mariposa Perfumery, a shop that evokes the heady, artisanal aromas of early 1900s Parisian chic. Find brands such as Aesop, Robert Piguet, Juliet Has a Gun, and Keiko Meicheri.

Beaufort Street does food very well and I can guarantee you will have a hard time choosing between the modern Mexican delights of El Publico, who use only the best local seasonal ingredients, and Cantina 663, whose considered menu leans towards the flavours of Spain and Italy.

Fine wine and dining go hand in hand, so if you’re looking for something special I’d recommend the Must Winebar. Must has been delighting food and wine lovers for the last ten years. With a wine list of more than 600, sit in sumptuous surroundings and sample a sophisticated bar menu, or if you’re after a heartier option pop over to the bistro for French-inspired fare.

To finish off your busy day on Beaufort Street, do a detour to Helvetica on St Georges Terrace, a beautiful bar that specialises in whiskies from around the world. If you’re in town for more than a few days, they also offer a bottle-keep service so you can savour the experience and enjoy your purchase on your next visit.
