Seeing the world by water really does offer a different perspective. The seas and rivers can be in turn thrilling and calming and allow a unique way for kids to view the world. Family travel writer Nichola West rounds up her top aquatic adventures for young explorers.

Have some fun family-bonding time with children on a kayaking trip along Croatia’s beautiful rivers. Paddling past waterfalls, hills, and forests is awe-inspiring, and everyone will be pleased they’ve unplugged. There are a number of different graded rivers depending on your experience.

Scuba diving, Maldives

Children keen to explore more about life below the waves will love the opportunity to discover how to snorkel in the colourful coral reefs around the Maldives – one of the best places to learn. There’s a host of excellent areas filled with marine life to explore, and adults will love the scuba diving too.

Stand-up paddleboarding, Thailand

Stand-up paddleboarding or ‘SUP’ is one of the fastest-growing water sports, and Phuket is one of the best places to learn this relaxing and recreational activity. Perfect for all the family to enjoy: you can take part in guided tours and have lessons while taking in Thailand’s crystal-clear waters and white beaches.

Surfing, Morocco

Older children and strong swimmers can grab a board and learn the basics of surfing in Morocco. With an array of surfer-friendly spots to enjoy across the Taghazout area, you can experience surfing tuition in a fun, safe environment and pick up key techniques to help you progress more quickly.

Dolphin watching, Miami

Instead of your run-of-the-mill staged dolphin show, see these beautiful creatures where they should be seen – in the wild. Take a fun boat ride out with Ocean Force Adventures in Miami, and while you’re learning about the history of the area you can also spot dolphins swimming, feeding, and jumping out of the water. It’s a great opportunity to talk to kids about the importance of wildlife conservation while watching these beautiful creatures.
