Getting away doesn’t have to cost the earth. More resorts are realising that going green can still create an amazing experience for their guests. Family travel writer Nichola West rounds up five of the top eco-friendly resorts for all the family.

Gili Lankanfushi, Maldives

Gili Lankanfushi is the first resort in the Maldives to be Green Fin-certified, meaning that it promotes snorkelling in an environmental way. The resort also grows its own organic vegetables and spices and will tailor activities to your child, including a chance to learn about ways to help save the coral reef.

White Pods, Switzerland

High in the Swiss Alps, White Pods is a great spot for a family eco vacation. Guests stay in geodesic dome pods which keep warm in winter and cool in summer and aim to make little to no impact on the local environment. There are plenty of activities for kids, including skiing, biking, and paragliding.

Bombah Point Eco Cottages, Australia

Just two-and-a-half hours north of Sydney you’ll feel you’re a world away at Bombah Point Eco Cottages. Powered by solar and using their own organic food grown on site, it offers some great activities for kids, including kayaking, swimming, and a chance to discover the giant sand dunes littered with ancient Aboriginal tools.

Grootbos, South Africa

Grootbos describes itself as a “five-star eco-paradise” with a huge amount to offer the family visitor. Children can enjoy horse riding and whale watching, and Grootbos also has its own foundation to give back to the local community, including a sports-based initiative to help change the lives of local children.

Terranea Resort, USA

Minutes away from Los Angeles, Terranea is like its own little bubble of calm. Local, seasonal food is used, and the whole resort pays careful attention to the environment. It uses energy-efficient lighting and is part of a programme to decrease water and energy usage. With a number of kids’ clubs and lots of activities on offer from golf to a tide-pool adventure camp, Terranea offers fun for all the family.
