family travel - The best ski resorts for families
Written by Oryx
It is time to head for the snow, and with many ski resorts providing a host of activities for children, there’s never been a better time to get the whole family out on the slopes. Nichola West rounds up the best family-friendly winter destinations.
Les Arcs, France
This series of seven purpose-built villages in Savoie, France, offers magnificent skiing for all ages and levels of experience. My personal favourite is Les Arcs 1950, where you will find great ski schools, après-ski activities for families, and restaurants, cafés, and shops in a traditional alpine village which is completely car free.
Hakuba Valley, Japan
Hakuba Valley offers 200 different ski trails and 11 different resorts, so you won’t tire of the excellent skiing on offer for all abilities. There are international ski schools for children, too.
Clavière is Italy’s oldest ski resort and sits on the Italy/France border. It offers skiing for all levels and activities for younger children, including sledging and skating at the village ice rink. A picture-postcard location, with nurseries and kids’ clubs offering indoor activities and the best of the great outdoors for little ones.
Mont Blanc, Canada
This beautiful ski resort has more than 40 ski trails, including learner areas and smaller hills. They have a special programme which combines fun play and skiing to get youngsters ready for the slopes, and there are also swimming pools and a huge soft play area for downtime away from the snow.
Families will love this ski resort in the heart of Norway with gentle slopes and quiet pistes – perfect for children learning to ski. Off the slopes there’s snowmobiling and snowrafting, and you can even try your hand at ice fishing on the frozen lakes.
