Medical tourism is an ever-growing trend in the world of travel. Here are the hottest places to go and what they’re known for.

Medical tourists in search of cost-effective procedures (especially those of a cosmetic nature) have been flocking to Thailand for years. And with good reason – the country’s foremost hospital, Bumrungrad International, is a fully US-accredited facility and has 225 US board-certified physicians and surgeons on staff. The country is also known for its holistic spa destinations such as the world-famous Chiva Som International Health Resort and Spa (above) in picturesque Hua Hin.

Every year, Germany welcomes over 750,000 international patients, a large portion of them hailing from the Gulf States. With state-of-the-art hospitals and revolutionary new treatments, this country is at Europe’s healthcare forefront. But travellers are advised to do their homework and avoid dubious agencies that charge astronomical middlemen fees. Most of the biggest and best hospitals in Germany have their own international centres for the foreign visitors that make them in excess of US$1 billion a year.

This lively country is the world’s hub for cosmetic medical tourism. The truth is, cosmetic treatments here are about 20–30% the price they are in the USA or Europe. And with pristine beaches stretching out forever, there’s so much more to spend that 70–80% saving on.

It is said that a bypass surgery with heart valve replacement will cost you about one-tenth of the price of a similar procedure in the USA. And with hospitals like Fortis Wockhardt in Mumbai, Apollo in New Delhi and Chennai, and the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, also in Chennai, there is a host of specialised facilities to choose from. What’s more, the rates of success are in line with those found in the USA and Europe.

Perhaps the ultimate status symbol among world medical travellers is a procedure done in the United States. And with pioneering, world-class facilities such as Johns Hopkins and Massachusetts General (ranked US News #1 and #2, respectively) it’s not hard to see why. Destination spas also abound in the USA, from Canyon Ranch in Arizona to Massachusetts in Florida, and the renowned California Health and Longevity Institute.
