August is the busiest holiday month but don’t let the crowds put you off. Take advantage of the dry season in Bali or Colombo, and experience Paris in a new light.

Falling in Bali’s dry season, August brings fresher air and slightly cooler temperatures to the island. For anyone coming to Bali for surfing, the waves are at their best during the dry season, and despite the crowds there are still some secluded beaches to be found if you’re prepared to explore. Away from the picture-perfect beaches, make time to discover the Balinese countryside with its lush rice paddies and volcanic backdrop; visit one of thousands of temples – the most popular being Tanah Lot, a temple on a rock formation just off the coast; and head to a spa for an authentic Balinese massage.

August and September make up the inter-monsoon period in Sri Lanka, when it is generally relatively dry throughout the country. So much is packed into this small island, from the rich colonial heritage and shopping opportunities in Colombo to the country’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, pristine beaches, and incredible scenery and wildlife.

Although many Parisians leave the city in August for their summer break and tourists flock in, the atmosphere is more relaxed; the roads are quieter, the air is cleaner, and the many visitors from around the world give the city a new dynamic. If you’ve already ‘done’ Paris, August is a great time to visit for a new experience.
