plan ahead - July
Written by Oryx
Oryx presents its insider’s tips for places to visit in July.
Explore ancient history in Sofia, join in Fourth of July celebrations in Orlando, and witness the wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara.
Discover Sofia’s ancient history
Bulgaria’s capital and largest city is a solid choice during July for its moderate climate, with temperatures averaging 21°C. Take in the spectacular interior of Banya Bashi Mosque, designed by Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, who also built the Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul; and look out for the 45m-high gold-plated dome of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. St Sofia Temple, situated in the city centre, is one of the oldest churches in Sofia and one of the symbols of the city, whilst the National Archaeological Museum is housed in Buyuk Dzhamiya (The Large Mosque), the oldest preserved building in Sofia, dating back to the end of the 15th century.
Independence Day in Orlando
For a family holiday in July, join in with the Independence Day celebrations in the USA and head to Walt Disney World in Florida for the Magic Kingdom’s ‘Disney’s Celebrate America – a Fourth of July Concert in the Sky’. A patriotic parade and fireworks spectacular are all part of the festivities.
Wildebeest migration, Masai Mara
July marks the arrival of the awe-inspiring wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara, Kenya: experience it first-hand on safari. July is sunny with clear skies and there are fewer mosquitoes, and wildlife is easier to spot because the bush is less dense and animals gather around waterholes and rivers.
