plan ahead - Places to visit in July
Written by Oryx
Oryx presents its insider’s tips for places to visit in July. Catch the best of Bali’s climate, Sofia’s café culture, and Kenya’s wildlife as the Great Migration crosses into the Masai Mara.
The beauty of Bali
July is one of the coolest months of the year in Bali – with temperatures around 23 to 31°C – one of the best times to visit the island. Make the most of the warm sun and refreshing breeze on Bali‘s beaches. Jimbaran Bay has one of the best sandy beaches in South Bali and some of the finest high-end resorts. The grilled seafood restaurants on the beach are a major draw in the evenings, as is the stunning sunset. Take advantage of the cooler mornings to experience sunrise from the summit of Mount Agung in East Bali, the highest mountain on the island and the fifth-highest volcano in the whole of Indonesia.
On the way down, visit Pura Besakih: Bali’s largest and holiest temple is perched on its slopes. Head to upmarket Seminyak for luxury accommodation, trendy high-end restaurants, bars, spas, and boutique shopping, and to Ubud for a dose of culture.

Summer in Sofia
Sofia is a solid choice during July for its clear weather and warm climate with maximum temperatures of around 26°C. Café tables move out onto the pavement and many residents head out of Sofia in July, making it a good month for visitors to enjoy a less hectic city.
If you are walking through the centre of Sofia on a sunny day, the light glinting off the famous gold-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral will draw your eye to its unique architecture. Explore the city’s other cultural sights, such as the Banya Bashi Mosque, built over natural thermal spas; the National Art Gallery; and the Archaeological Museum, which occupies the former Ottoman mosque.

Follow the herd
Kenya is home to the world-famous Masai Mara, rich in resident wildlife, and from July to October every year becomes the site of the awe-inspiring Great Wildebeest Migration from the Serengeti plains. The migration includes over one million animals and the sheer magnificence of the display makes it one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Experience the variety of landscape and wildlife across Kenya’s 48 national parks from the comfort of one of Kenya’s many luxury lodges, safari camps, or tented camps and then end your Kenyan holiday on the coast.
