Written by Oryx
Oryx presents its insiders tips for places to visit in November. Colombo's wildlife comes into full view after monsoon season, Cape Town warms up for summer sightseeing, and Dubai's entertainment can be enjoyed during its cooler winter.
Wildlife watching in Colombo
November in Colombo is fresh after the monsoon season with a relatively warm climate. Sri Lanka is becoming popular as a dolphin- and whale-watching hotspot, and November marks the beginning of the season for spotting blue whales, which can be seen off the south coast of the island. Other natural wildlife ranges from the Asian elephant and leopards to incredible bird life, best seen in some of the country's nine national parks and seven bird sanctuaries. Forty-three of the endangered species listed by the World Conservation Union can be found in Sri Lanka's national parks. Minneriya National Park is famous for 'The Gathering' – where herds of 300-400 can be seen night after night, but by November these herds are on the move to Kaudulla National Park. As well as wildlife, Sri Lanka is extraordinarily diverse in terms of scenery and culture. The best shopping can be found in the Fort and Pettah districts of Colombo, while beaches just an hour or so south of the city offer beautiful views and great surfing.

Take the cable car up Table Mountain for views of the city centre and Atlantic Ocean, or take in the spectacular scenery from Cape Point, the most southwesterly tip of Africa. Visit the whale-watching capital of Hermanus and the brightly painted Georgian terraces and narrow cobbled streets of Bo Kaap, lounge on city beaches, and stroll around the African craft markets in Cape Town Central, or visit the V&A Waterfront with its shops, restaurants, and luxurious hotels.

As the mercury moves down the thermometer, Dubai's inviting winter season offers a cooler and less humid atmosphere. Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world and the centrepiece of downtown Dubai. Marvel at the artificial archipelagos of The Palm Jumeirah and The World. As well as a vast array of shops, Dubai's wide range of malls are destinations in themselves, with an aquarium and ice rink at Dubai Mall, Aquaventure water park at Atlantis The Palm, and Ski Dubai at the Mall of Emirates. Other entertainment options include Global Village, a cultural, entertainment, family, and shopping destination, theme and water parks, and desert safaris.
