plan ahead - May

Oryx presents its insiders tips for places to visit in May.
May marks the beginning of the dry season in Bali, as temperatures climb to the warmest they will get all year, with balmy averages of 28C. Here are our tips to make the most of one of the worlds most popular island destinations.
Bali is relatively small and can be explored in a short amount of time. For an overview of the island, rent a bicycle or a car and explore the villages and rice paddy fields.
For a buzzier atmosphere, head to the cultural capital Ubud, which became internationally famous after the movie Eat Pray Love starring Julia Roberts was filmed there. Here, you can also visit Monkey Forest, featuring cheeky long-tailed macaques, and take in lovely views of Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan.
For more breathtaking views of Bali, take a sunrise hike up to the summit of Mt Batur at Kintamani a volcanic mountain that is beautifully mirrored in Lake Batur at its base. For a gorgeous sunset scene, visit Tanah Lot, the famous sea temple built on a huge rock off the southwest coast of the island.
Bali offers many unique experiences to make an unforgettable trip. If you’re a coffee lover, try the ultimate experience at one of Balis agrotourism coffee plantations, where you can see how the coffee is made, try samples, and buy some to take home. For evening entertainment with an authentic atmosphere and setting, watch a traditional kecak dance at Puri Dalem Taman Kaja, Ubud. If its action you’re after, then try your hand at surfing at the popular Kuta
Beach, or go rafting along the scenic Ayung River in Ubud.
And, of course, no trip to Bali would be complete without a traditional Balinese massage at one of its luxury spas.
