Oryx presents its insider’s tips for places to visit in August. While crowds can be unavoidable at popular destinations in August, these places are at their best during this month and are well worth the visit. Plan ahead to beat the queues.
The Côte d’Azur, or French Riviera, enjoys an ideal climate in summer with plenty of sunshine, daytime temperatures averaging 23°C, and wonderfully warm nights. The perfect weather in August means it does get very busy, but crowds dwindle slightly towards the end of the month. With beautiful beaches stretching along the coast from Monaco to St Tropez, it’s the perfect place to soak up the Mediterranean sun, and quieter beaches can still be found away from the tourist hotspots. Alternatively, charter a yacht or take a cruise along the coastline and experience the French Riviera from a different perspective.
Festival season hits Edinburgh in August, when the city’s historic streets and myriad venues come alive with performances of comedy, music, theatre, opera, dance, and entertainment from around the globe. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is another iconic Edinburgh institution held every August, a spectacle not to be missed.
