Oryx presents its insider’s tips for places to visit in October. Experience nature’s changing colours in Japan, people-watch in Amsterdam, and enjoy a crisp autumn stroll through Paris.
October is one of the most pleasant months for travelling in Japan, as the weather is still warm but no longer hot and humid. While many people visit Japan in spring to witness the cherry blossom (sakura), the country is just as spectacular in autumn, when the leaves change into a range of brilliant colours (koyo). Starting in mid-September, the ‘koyo front’ moves from the north until it reaches central and southern Japan towards the end of November. Lake Kawaguchiko is a must-see in late October, when the fiery-hued trees are lit up at night against the backdrop of Mount Fuji.

There’s no bad time to visit Amsterdam, as the city provides year-round entertainment. Although the weather is often wet, breezy, and changeable in October, you can always take shelter inside a cosy canal-side café or restaurant, and spend more time at the city’s renowned museums and galleries.

Another year-round destination, Paris is still a lot quieter in October than in summer, offering more space to wander around the city’s best museums and galleries. Enjoy crisp, sunny autumn mornings strolling through Paris’s many parks and gardens, and spend evenings admiring the view from behind the window of a warm Parisian restaurant.
