Heading off on honeymoon? Here are five destinations sure to create lasting memories and get you in the mood for romance, thanks to their associations with beauty, love, and poetry.
Taj Mahal, India
It may be one of the world’s most photographed buildings, but nothing prepares you for the impact of the Taj Mahal. Though enormous, the delicacy of the architecture is brilliant, creating white marble domes seemingly as fragile as spun sugar. Every surface is inlaid with lapis lazuli, onyx, amber, and gold. The Taj was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz, but he never set foot here; he was deposed and incarcerated in Agra Fort, spending his declining years staring downriver at his masterpiece, the world’s greatest expression of grief and love.

Tanah Lot, Bali
The 16th-century Hindu temple at Tanah Lot is important to Balinese mythology but, for romantic couples, the coastal setting is the chief attraction, especially at sunset, when the sky and sea turn orange. Many parts of the complex, which sits on a small island joined to the mainland by a causeway, have stunning views.

Trevi Fountain, Rome
The 1954 Hollywood romantic comedy Three Coins in the Fountain made this ornate monument famous; it also featured in Roman Holiday and Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita. The triumphant expression of baroque magnificence is topped by a statue of Neptune riding a winged chariot. It’s said that if you throw a coin into the fountain, it will ensure your return to Rome – and who wouldn’t want to relive their honeymoon in years to come?

Flight Time: 6 hours

Eiffel Tower, Paris
This icon of travel is the most visited monument in the world, but despite the crowds, it’s still the ultimate in romance. This wonderfully alluring structure and engineering marvel is at its most impressive if you alight at Trocadéro metro station and admire it from the Seine river. Of the Eiffel Tower’s three levels, the second is best for honeymoon photos, while the topmost platform is magnificent just before sunset.
Distance: 4,980 km
Flight Time: 7 hours, 15 minutes
Frequency: 3 flights a day
West Lake, Hangzhou
Hangzhou is one of the destinations most favoured by Chinese honeymooners, and for good reason: the often misty shores of its West Lake are dotted with pavilions and pagodas, with humpbacked bridges leading to little islands shaded by weeping willows. Take to a rowing boat for a romantic drift among the lake’s lotus flowers, and stay at one of the lakeshore’s five-star hotels with moonlit views over the water.
