Beyond style and good looks, we’ve found six top pools with that extra something. Slip off your clothes, grab your designer sunglasses, and plunge into the world’s most spectacular swimming venues.

Marina Bay Sands, Singapore

Sultry Singapore is no stranger to swimming pools, but nothing can beat the pool in this hotel’s SkyPark, which sits 57 floors up on a rooftop platform that connects the three towers of the hotel and entertainment complex. The infinity pool – open only to hotel guests – is 150m in length and lays claim to being the the longest and highest outdoor pool in the world. Its cantilevered design makes you feel as if you’re about to swim off the edge and into the sky, and provides stunning views over Singapore’s Central Business District and Marina Bay.

Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong

The swimming pool on the 118th floor of this cloud-puncturing Hong Kong skyscraper is the world’s highest. At 490m above the harbour, the pool is almost at the same height as The Peak across the water, traditionally reached by rack railway. A paddle out to its infinity edge (albeit behind glass) is not for the faint-hearted. Do the backstroke and you can gaze at 144 video screens embedded in the ceiling, adding a sense of the surreal.

Hong Kong, China
Distance: 6,337 km
Flight Time: 7 hours, 35 minutes
Frequency: Twice daily

The Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur

Two outdoor swimming pools, both heated in winter, offer guests a difficult choice here: the spa pool overlooks Lake Pichola, while the main pool sits in a courtyard surrounded by landscaped gardens. You can also plunge right into private pools from the terrace of your suite and swim overlooked by the turrets and battlements of this grand hotel, inspired by Rajasthani palace architecture.

Delhi, India
Distance: 2,572 km
Flight Time: 3 hours, 30 minutes
Frequency: 2 flights a day

Grace Hotel, Santorini

Santorini’s best hotels all take advantage of the vivid orange sunset views of this spectacular Greek island. At chic, minimalist Grace Hotel in Imerovigli, however,
you can enjoy the spectacle without leaving your plunge pool. Guests can also flop at the expansive infinity pool, which provides equally dazzling blue-and-white views over the sea-filled caldera of this ancient volcano.

Athens, Greece
Distance: 2,973 km
Flight Time: 5 hours, 5 minutes
Frequency: 3 flights a day

The Biltmore, Miami

Few swimming pools have quite this pedigree: at the height of the Jazz Age the Biltmore’s waters were famous for hosting synchronised swimmers, alligator wrestling, and high divers. Johnny Weissmuller was a swimming instructor here before he went on to star as Tarzan. The pool was once the world’s largest, and is still the biggest in the continental United States, surrounded by faux-Mediterranean follies that include Roman statues and a Moorish tower.

Miami, USA
Distance: 12,342 km
Flight Time: 15 hour, 40 minutes
Frequency: Daily Flights

The Hanging Gardens, Bali

Regularly feted as one of the world’s best pools and often used as a backdrop to photo shoots, this infinity pool in Ubud, which cascades from one level to another, provides views over a jungle-filled valley. Lined with stone, protected by a geometric wall of solidified volcanic ash and with an undulating, free-form shape that echoes traditional rice terraces of central Bali, it’s also lauded for its design. As well as a swim, guests can enjoy a romantic dinner on floating wooden decks, surrounded by bobbing candlelight.

Bali, Indonesia
Distance: 6,930 km
Flight Time: 12 hours , 10 minutes
Frequency: Daily via Singapore
