When its chilly across much of the northern hemisphere, the warm waters of the world lure international surfers with tempting breaks. Here are some top spots to catch the perfect wave.

Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka

Coral breaks and consistently good swells between November and April make Hikkaduwa the most popular surf spot in Sri Lanka, with boards afloat from dawn to dusk. The best break is 50m offshore, directly in front of the guesthouses that line the beautiful beach of this casual town 98km south of Colombo. Relaxed or inexperienced surfers head to Main Reef and Beach Break; the intense Inside Reef and sharp corals of Bennys are strictly for the experts.

Taghazout, Morocco

This chilled-out surf destination  actually a small Berber fishing village just north of Agadir  has a laid-back vibe, warm waters, and great beaches. The best waves in Morocco, fuelled by Atlantic swells, arrive between September and early March and are notable for long, right-hand point breaks, which, under the perfect conditions, can take adept surfers on a 2km ride from Anchor Point to Panorama. Other well-known breaks are Hash Point, Killer Point, and Boilers.

Mentawai Islands, Indonesia

One of the most consistently great surf destinations in the world is powered by the southeast trade winds that blow in from the Indian Ocean onto this scattering of some 70 islands west of Sumatra. Every serious surfer dreams of hitting the waves here, especially between late April and early November when almost 50 excellent breaks are at their best. They come with names such as Burgerworld, Bank Vaults, and Hideaways, with Rifles  a very long and fast right-hander that wraps around a small island  arguably the best of all.
