You’d have to be hard of heart not to appreciate the technicoloured spectacle, photo opportunities, and glorious romance of a sunset. Here are five of the best sunset destinations.

Venice, Italy

One of the world’s most romantic cities is a fitting stage for sunset, but you’ll have to get out onto the harbour to admire it at its most splendid. The sun’s long rays illuminate the city’s floating palaces, slender spires, and Gothic towers like a painting in a medieval manuscript, as water gurgles and ferries chug.

Istanbul, Turkey

Though the sun disappears behind the hills rather than into the sea in Istanbul, there are few better places to be as evening falls than on the city’s busy Bosphorus harbour-front, where you can watch the sun drop behind a fabulous panorama of minarets, palace cupolas, and Ottoman towers outlined against a fading sky. It’s a bold, beautiful scene and testament to Istanbul’s ageless appeal.

Santorini, Greece

There’s no more famous place for sunsets than this ancient, cliff-ringed volcanic remnant in the Aegean Sea with its bold, elemental colours and dramatically situated villages. Sunset is an event eagerly awaited by all its visitors. The sea turns purple, the island’s whitewashed houses shades of pink, the cliffs red, topped by dollops of orange clouds. The best viewing spots include the ruined fort at Oia, the 360m cliffs at Imerovigli, and the chapel at tranquil Skaros in Santorini’s northwest.

Aswan, Egypt

The Nile River slides between city and sandbanks at Aswan, its water tumbled with giant pink boulders and skimmed by the white sails of passing feluccas. Golden light lengthens, the sun sinks towards the desert, and the Nile’s waters blush before they’re wrapped in night. The scene has been enjoyed over afternoon tea from the terrace of the Old Cataract Hotel for well over a century; another top sunset moment can be enjoyed from the back of a camel as you ride across the West Bank’s sand dunes towards the romantic ruins of the Monastery of St. Simeon.

Cairo, Egypt
Distance: 2,066 km
Flight Time: 3 hours, 25 minutes
Frequency: 3 flights a day

Borobudur, Indonesia

Sunset comes suddenly and early in the tropics, but its brief moment of flamboyance is spectacular. Linger until after the tour coaches depart from the immense Buddhist temple at Borobudur, which covers an entire hillside, and enjoy the show. A fireball sun sinks into the distant forest, colouring the ancient monument’s carved reliefs, which depict a parade of kings, courtiers, musicians, dancing girls, and sailing ships. Some 400 cross-legged Buddha statues add to the tranquil ambiance.

Jakarta, Indonesia
Distance: 6,918 km
Flight Time: 8 hours, 55 minutes
Frequency: 3 flights a day
