luxe shopping - Le Marais, Paris
Written by Lia Jashanmal
The once run-down Le Marais district in Paris is now the city’s hippest quartier, and the perfect place to head to if you’re after original finds.
Le Marais is undoubtedly the most charming area of Paris, with narrow, winding cobbled streets and slumping old buildings that contrast with the modern, lively edge that being the best part of town brings. As chic as it is arty, here you’ll find independent labels and unique pieces for the home, not to mention the finest in contemporary art. Get into the spirit of this fashionable neighbourhood by enhancing your wardrobe at high-end concept store, L’Eclaireur. The store is an art installation in itself, with organic wood panels that shift to unveil collections ranging from classic French designers (Lanvin, Givenchy) to the contemporary and international (Dries Van Noten, Maison Rabih Kayrouz). Nearby mixed-brand stores include Shine and innovative charity store Merci. Pick any of the area’s innumerable quaint streets at random and you’ll happen upon one-off jewellery stores and off-the-wall art galleries. The best tour includes rue de Bretagne, rue Vieille du Temple, and rue des Francs Bourgeois, followed by a stroll through Village Saint Paul, home to bewitching antique and vintage stores, a cosy English bookshop, and gift shop.
