spa - Javana Spa, Salak Mountain
Written by Ayesha Khan
Located atop Salak Mountain, which is thought to have a special healing energy, the Javana Spa offers the ideal getaway for both eco adventurers and spa buffs.
A typical day combines extensive hikes through lush forests and waterfalls with relaxing spa treatments, yoga classes, and refreshing ‘juice breaks’. The cuisine is specially created to be low fat and instrumental in the wellness that the spa promotes. Communication with the outside world is discouraged, and there are no TVs or radios in any of the 30 bungalows. But with the tranquil Japanese Zen garden landscape, and vast canopies of lush tropical rainforest, guests would find TVs, phones, and radios unnecessary distractions.
There is a host of spa treatments to choose from (in fact, two are scheduled on everyone’s daily agenda). The traditional Indonesian massage is ideal for preparing the muscles for exercise, while the volcanic mud body massage is a great way to relax after a long hike through the grounds, which include seven waterfalls. Perhaps the most refreshing of the signature treatments at the Javana Spa is the ginger-root compress, known to soothe even the most overworked muscles.
Historically, a pilgrimage to Salak Mountain was said to bring rejuvenation and healing to all. The entire mountain is interspersed with fascinating shrines and tombs, providing a unique insight into Java’s rich past. This is far from just folklore – the yellow sulphuric clay found around the volcano’s crater was used for hundreds of years for Indonesia’s royal court thanks to its unique healing properties. Today, the same mineral flows in the abundant soaking pools throughout Javana Spa.
