Bali’s busy south has its attractions – hip eateries, cosmopolitan hotels – but travellers seeking to uncover the island’s best treasures need only head just an hour or two further afield.

Just to the northwest of Bali lies Menjangan Island, part of the island’s only National Park and home to Bali’s best diving and snorkelling. A day trip here should see you frolicking with an array of marine life including gorgonian sea fans, lionfish, and stingrays. The black-sand beaches of Bali’s east coast meanwhile have a wild, untamed atmosphere, with views across to the soaring limestone cliffs of Nusa Penida. The bays of Amed offer a chance to see working fishing villages in action, with fleets of jukung fishing boats gliding towards the horizon pre-dawn.

Or head inland for cooler weather and spectacular rice-paddy views. Ubud is deservedly popular, but for a quieter alternative head to enchanting Sidemen, where the surrounding valleys are scalloped with emerald terraces and you can go mountain biking to really get away from it all. Travel through Swiss Alp-like terrain to uncover the small settlement of Munduk clinging to a ridge, where you can hike to see waterfalls and savour fresh mountain air; or head to nearby Munduk Lumbang for a farmstay on your own private hill.

If you literally want to get on top of things, climb Bali’s revered Gunung Agung. Even if you’re in top shape, it’s a challenging volcano climb, but you’ll be rewarded with seeing the sun rise over the Island of the Gods.
