weekend away - Serene Kamalaya, Koh Samui, Thailand
Written by Caroline Sylger Jones
Kamalaya holistic wellness retreat at the quiet end of Koh Samui in Thailand is a wonderful sanctuary where you can do as much or as little as you want.
Set away from the busy throng in the north of Koh Samui, Kamalaya is an idyllic holistic spa resort that feels genuinely peaceful. Serene, uncluttered villas and thatched public spaces are tucked into a fairy-tale ravine strewn with granite boulders and tropical plants. Food is delicious yet still detoxifying, and service throughout calm and friendly.
There’s a sensitively designed yoga pavilion, a dramatic Yantra hall for workshops, and an orange Alchemy lounge filled with comfy day beds. Take a dip in the soothing outdoor swimming pool, or sunbathe on the private beach beside a chalky blue lagoon.
At the heart of the site is the hilltop spa, with its inspiring sea views out to the far horizon and over 70 wellness treatments and services on its menu. There are detox, stress and burnout, weight loss, fitness, and yoga programmes, or you can create your own bespoke experience in consultation with a naturopath. Expert help is at hand from all manner of therapists, from acupuncturists to visiting spiritual gurus.
Have a Thai massage in one of the elevated, open-air rooms, wander in and out of the steam room and plunge pools set into natural rock, sip fruit mojitos in a waterside wooden booth, and enjoy a daily programme of complimentary classes. You can go on local hikes – though we rather think you’ll be tempted to stay on site.
At the centre of Kamalaya is a tiny cave temple where Buddhist monks used to meditate. Pop in for some peace, or book a mentoring session with Rajesh Ramani at the spa. Rajesh was a monk for 14 years, and can offer advice to set you on a happier path. kamalaya.com/kamalaya-easy-bookingrequest
