What’s in my travel bag: Donna Karan
Written by Oryx
Not only is the iconic fashion designer’s DKNY street-wear label synonymous with New York City, her Donna Karan brand revolutionised the way women dress. Karan spends most of her time traversing the globe, both for her multibillion-dollar eponymous labels and for her Urban Zen charitable foundation.
Bali is my favourite place in the world. It’s my spiritual refuge, my calm in the chaos of my life. When I go there, I’m like a child, with all my senses awakened and alive. Creatively, I’m inspired by its lush, natural beauty and artisan culture. For me, just being in Bali is therapy for the soul.
When travelling I always have my papier-mâché bag from Haiti. I sell them as part of my Urban Zen initiative, where we work with artisans, giving people jobs and bringing awareness to the country. We have the opportunity to help the developing work by helping them to create products.
I carry my sketchbook with me everywhere I go, from fabric mills in India to visits with local artisans in Haiti.
I also like to carry a belt bag, such as the DKNY Lamb Leather Belt Bag, because it frees up my hands and I can feel it on my body so I know my belongings are always safe.
I don’t like to bother with too much make-up, but I do carry two essentials with me at all times – an Urban Decay eye pencil in black and MAC’s Freckletone lipstick.
The DKNY cashmere Cozy is one of the most flexible pieces you could pack. It wraps around the body in any number of ways, always looking different. Wear it as a top, an easy jacket, or as a lightweight sweater at night.
DKNY’s Cashmere Mist body lotionis a scent and treatment in one.
Young Living’s Thieves essential oilis potent and sensual. It is said to have been used by four infamous thieves in France who used to rob plague victims covered in cloves, rosemary, and other aromatics. It supports the immune system and promotes general wellbeing.
